Born on the 1st of March1928 in Chisinau, from refugee parents from Transnistria, he had a good upbringing. He was a pupil at the primary school for boys No. 2, then at the "King Ferdinand I" Military High School, evacuated during the war in Craiova.In 1946 he was admitted through an entrance exam at the General Medicine Faculty of the University of Medicine in Chisinau.
He graduated from the Institute of Medicine in 1954, started his medical career at Puhaceni, and in three years due to his exceptional qualities of organizer he was appointed head doctor of Bulboaca district. He decided to continue on his way to surgery. In 1962 he defended the Ph.D. thesis, under the direction of Professor Pavel Rajov, after which he became assistant professor at the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry and Hygiene in Chisinau.
He continued his activity as associate professor, and in 1967 he was appointed head of the surgery department of the Faculty of Dentistry and Hygiene.In 1980 he defended the thesis for the habilitation in medicine, investigating a difficult problem of surgery - peritonitis - and became a university professor. In 1982 he was appointed as the Chief Surgeon of the Ministry of Health Organization, contributing to the improvement of medical and surgical care and, in particular, to the emergency care. The academician Eugen Maloman has always been remarked through the quality of the performance, whether it was lectures, conferences, public debates which turned into events beyond the core lesson, becoming examples of medical practice and ethical conduct.
He was concerned with the improvement of the didactic process, being among the first precursors of the University of Medicine who advocated for the transition to Romanian teaching language, actively participating in the translation of the didactic materials. He was a great surgeon.
Eugen Maloman has entwined much of his life with the surgical activity in the clinics he has run and faithfully served. He approached the most difficult areas of emergency surgery: peritonitis, acute pancreatitis, digestive haemorrhage, but also pathogenic treatment of ulcer disease, pancreatic hepatobiliary surgery. The surgeon has always been doubled by the doctor who knew how to approach the patients and care for them with devotion. He created a real school, with great achievements and prospects for the future. He coordinated the preparation and support of 46 theses of PhD and Habilitation in Medicine. He graduated his studies through a residency in Surgery. At the same time, scientific research remained one of the basic preoccupations of Professor Eugen Maloman.The scientific activity has resulted in more than 250 scientific papers, a monograph, two manuals, patents and an impressive number of Methodical Elaborations. The collective treaty "Emergency Abdominal Surgery" published in two editions, the last in 2009, remained in collective memory.
He was an active participant in numerous national and international congresses. He was a member of the editorial board of the "Surgery" journal in Bucharest, "Journal of Surgery" in Iasi, "Art Medica" and "Medical Currier" of the Republic of Moldova. As recognition of his scientific merits, Eugen Maloman was elected member of the Academy of Sciences of New York, the European Association of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, honorary member of the Society of Surgery and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgery in Romania. As confirmation of the researcher vocation he received the title of Scientist Emeritus. In 1998, he was awarded the Glory of Labour Order. Since 2012 he held the highest award of the State - the Order of the Republic.
In 2018 he was awarded the title of Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova. The responsible involvement in community life has been a duty of honour for Professor Eugen Maloman, a continuation of the spiritual message of Nicolae Testimiteanu and Nicolae Anestiadi. Even during the difficult times for the intellectual world of Chisinau, he did not hesitate to promote the Romanian spiritual values. His courageous civic position is known, being omnipresent to all national events.He did not want to die until he regained the Romanian citizenship which came hard for this great patriot, only in 2011. At the meeting of the "Nicolae Anestiadi" Surgery Society, at the proposal of Professor Eugen Maloman, was signed the Declaration of Union with Motherland - Romania.
Professor Eugen Maloman was a native scholar, man of culture, intelligent, erudite, a true model for the next generations and has shown a strong moral centre worth following, winning a well-deserved place among the nation's leaders. On March 23, 2018, Professor Eugen Maloman celebrated 90 years as a patriarch of Bessarabia surgery at the "Nicolae Testemitanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF). The rector of USMF "Nicolae Testemitanu", academician Ion Ababii, stressed that Professor Eugen Maloman is a pride to Alma Mater and an example of exigency and professionalism.
Academician Gheorghe Guizim, Eva Gudumac, Prof. Sergiu Ungureanu (disciple), Professor Eugen Gutu appreciated the professional and human qualities of the great predecessor. ... Not two months later, on May 14th, Professor Eugene MALOMAN died, leaving a warm memory in the heart of those who met him.
