Colorectal Cancer with Liver Metastases - is there a Chance for Cure

Combined treatment with chemotherapy and surgery is thecurrently accepted standard for patients with metastaticcolorectal cancer which can be rendered to resectability and avery efficient way to increase survival of patients with hepaticmetastases from colorectal cancer. Cooperation betweensurgeons and oncologists is mandatory to insure these patients’best chance for survival. Patients with resectable disease mustfollow adjuvant chemotherapy, while patients with initiallyunresectable marginally resectable disease after downsizingwith the help of chemotherapy must be given the chance ofsurgical reevaluation for having the metastatic disease resected,and then follow adjuvant chemotherapy. An impressive amountof new surgical techniques warrants the success of hepaticresection in metastatic disease while a whole constellation ofnovel chemotherapeutical and even more effective targetedagents assure better response rates, surgical resection rates andoverall survival in these patients.
