Ciurea, presedintele Societãtii Române de Neurochirurgie, vicepresedinte "World Federation of Neurosurgeons".

The impressive Publishing House of the Romanian Academy published under the editorship of Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu a Textbook of Surgery formed of 10 volumes, which tries to reunite the ten main surgical disciplines (Urology, Neurosurgery, Bucco-Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Gynaecology, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, General Surgery - 2 volumes and Orthopaedics-Traumatology). Each volume was co-ordinated by a medical personality in the respective field, they having the difficult task to organize and structure the material in the most didactic and academic possible way.
The volume II with a number of 487 pages is dedicated to the neurosurgical specialty and is co-ordinated by Prof. Dr. A.V. Ciurea, president of the Romanian Society of Neurosurgery, vicepresident of the "World Federation of Neurosurgeons".
The book , structured in 23 chapters, includes the whole neurosurgical pathology (tumoral, vascular, paediatric, spinal and functional). The chapters are written by personalities from all the university centres (Bucharest, Iasi, Cluj Napoca, Constanta). There are largely explained clinical, imagistic aspects, and not least, the newest elements of the surgical technique. Each chapter shows a rich iconography, very well structured, of an irreproachable quality, iconography attentively selected from the data base of each co-author. The references published at the end of each chapter were selected and updated with much care.
The present monography joins the classical data of the neurosurgical literature with the actual data from both the personal experience and the specialized one. There are particularly mentioned the major advances, advances having influenced at a large extent the diagnosis and the treatment. One insists upon CT scan (Computed Tomography scan) and the imaging through MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), investigations introduced in the neurosurgical arsenal about 2 decades ago, the angiography 4 vessels with substraction and more recently the angioCT.
In the same time with the review of the means of investigations, there is presented the therapeutical part with the results of the authors and internationally.
The group of the authors from all the university centres succeeds, in a limited enough space, to achieve a quintessence in the neurosurgical pathology for each chapter, some being exhaustively presented, because precise details are needed in such a pathology field more rarely met. An important element is the chapter on the orbital tumours, that are largely presented, inclusively their surgical approaches and the adjacent results. It is to underline that the craniocerebral and vertebromedullary traumas are updated with the newest elements of physiopathology and of diagnosis. In a very special way are treated the vascular affections of the central nervous system, chapter where an important number of authors from 2 university centres, Bucharest and Iasi, contributed. One has to mention a chapter of Gamma-Knife radiosurgery presenting the indications and the counter-indications and the results of these new therapeutical procedures, moreover that the Gamma-Knife device has been functioning since more than 2 years. In a separate chapter there are approached advances and perspectives of evolution in neurosurgery.
Certainly, the authors could not cover all the complex data, being foreseen in the future the achievement of a large textbook of neurosurgery, which includes the whole pathology of the neurosurgery.
The book wishes to be largely adressed: residents and specialists in neurosurgery, but to the other related specialties wishing to complete the neurosurgical knowledge. Both the training curricula of the residents and the subjects of the speciality exam were included.
The publishing house of the Romanian Academy succeeded in achieving this Textbook of Surgery under special graphical conditions, its editorship being at the highest level.
We hope that through this volume we brought as more information as possible concerning the last ways of investigation and of treatment in the neurosurgery, having as final result a better prognosis in the patients with neurosurgical affections.
